Every once in a while, a session comes along that’s a little outside my usual rhythm—and reminds me just how much I love documenting all kinds of stories. Sonya reached out and asked me to spend a couple of evenings with the Wenonah High School Class of 1990 as they celebrated their 35-year class reunion here in the Smoky Mountains, and I’m so glad she did.

I’ve been photographing mostly couples and families lately, so it had been a few months since I’d covered an event. This reunion was such a fun change of pace. From the very beginning, the energy was incredible. This group traveled from all over to come together again, and you could truly feel how special it was to be in the same place after all these years.

They leaned all the way into the theme—80’s and 90’s outfits, lots of laughter, dancing, and yes… even a soul train line. Those moments are exactly why I love event photography: the unscripted, joy-filled candids that tell the real story of the night. Along with group photos, I focused on capturing those in-between moments that happen naturally when old friends reconnect.

The group stayed at a brand new cabin resort in Gatlinburg and graciously gave me the grand tour. I can confidently say this was one of the largest cabins I’ve ever been in. It had everything—basketball court, arcade, mini golf, a theater room, and not one but FIVE hot tubs. It was the perfect setting for a reunion weekend full of memories.

I’m always amazed by groups like this who make the effort to come together after decades apart. It was such an honor to document this milestone and help preserve these memories for years to come.

Thank you again to Sonya and the Wenonah High School Class of 1990 for choosing me and welcoming me into your celebration. I hope you had an unforgettable weekend in the Smokies.
