There are some sessions that are extra special, and Lydia’s first birthday cake smash session is definitely one of those for me. I’ve had the privilege of being part of this sweet family’s journey from the very beginning, and I can’t express how much it means to be asked to document these milestones. From attending their wedding, to capturing Haley’s maternity photos, and then photographing Lydia’s newborn portraits, it feels so full circle to celebrate her turning one today.

Despite a cold, wintery day, nothing could dampen the excitement or joy of this milestone moment. I packed up my portable studio and we set up a cozy little space to celebrate Lydia right in the heart of this winter wonderland. The snowflakes outside only added to the magic, creating the perfect backdrop for her cake smash.

Lydia is such a happy, adorable baby, with a smile that lights up the room. She was full of giggles and curiosity as she dove into her cake—watching her delight in the sweet mess she was making was a joy to capture. I’m always amazed by how babies seem to just know how to enjoy their first taste of cake!

And of course, no cake smash session is complete without a little extra help from family. Lydia’s cousins were right there, making her laugh and adding to the fun atmosphere. A huge shoutout to her Aunt Betsy—one of my best friends—for baking the beautiful cake that Lydia absolutely loved. The cake was just as sweet as the moment itself.

I can’t wait to see what’s next for this incredible family, but for now, I’ll treasure these photos of Lydia’s first birthday. It’s been an honor to be part of so many special memories, and I look forward to capturing many more in the years to come.
