The beauty of the Smoky Mountains in the fall is hard to beat — the crisp air, the vibrant foliage, and the scenic views all make it a perfect backdrop for family photos. But what truly made the Nelson family’s fall session special was not just the stunning scenery, but the joy, laughter, and love they brought with them all the way from Missouri.
Marisa and Lukas, along with their four sweet kiddos, made the journey to the Smokies for their family photos, and it was an absolute pleasure to capture their time together. With both of their mothers tagging along, it was a beautiful multi-generational session that was filled with love, memories, and lots of fun moments.
From the moment we started the session, it was clear that this family is full of energy and connection. Marisa and Lukas are such a great team — you can see the love and partnership in everything they do. Their kids, all full of personality, made the session one to remember.
The older kids were naturals in front of the camera, laughing, playing, and posing with ease. But the real challenge (and the real fun) came from their youngest, little Graham. He kept me on my toes, as all toddlers do, but that’s exactly why I love taking photos of kids this age. There’s something magical about capturing them in their element, whether it’s running around, exploring, or just being their silly selves.
Graham definitely made me work for it, but his curiosity and energy were contagious. I loved seeing his little face light up as he explored the gorgeous surroundings. Sometimes, the best photos happen when kids are just being themselves, playing and interacting with their environment, and that’s exactly what we got with Graham.
One of the things I always try to do during family sessions is to let the kids play and be themselves. While posed photos are lovely, some of the best moments happen when everyone is just being natural and enjoying each other’s company. With the Nelson family, there were so many of these spontaneous, beautiful moments.
Whether it was the kids chasing each other through the autumn leaves, or the whole family laughing together as they explored the trails, there was such an effortless joy to the way they interacted. It’s moments like these that make me fall in love with family photography all over again.
Having both grandmothers there added an extra layer of warmth to the session. There’s something truly special about capturing moments between generations. Seeing the grandkids interact with their grandmothers — full of love, tenderness, and pure joy — made for some truly heartwarming photos.
I always love when families embrace the chance to create memories with their extended families during photo sessions. It’s so important to capture those bonds, especially as the kids grow up, and these images will be treasured for years to come.
By the end of the session, we had a mix of playful candid moments, sweet posed family shots, and a collection of images that truly captured the essence of this wonderful family. The morning light, the stunning mountain backdrop, and the smiles on everyone’s faces made for a perfect fall session.
Thank you, Nelson family, for allowing me to document your adventure in the Smokies. It was such a joy to see your family’s love and laughter shining through every photo. I hope these images will remind you of your special time in the Smokies, and I’m so grateful I got to be part of your story.
Until next time, here’s to more adventures and beautiful family memories! 🍂
